I am a Chartered Accountant and Cost Accountant, who joined Ashok Leyland in 1995, expecting a career full on accounts, tax, etc.
Life took a different twist when I was made responsible for managing their market risk, I.e., FX and Interest Rate risk. The role came with an expectation of dynamically working on FX markets including taking active positions, what is called FX trading.
This made a huge difference to the role as, then, it was one of the very few corporates in the country who had a full fledged FX dealing room with infrastructure supporting it like Reuters, back office, etc., Trading, devising hedging program and executing of FX hedges with views on markets brought excitement day in and day out. It, of course, came with high pressure and learning for someone who, with just 8 months corporate experience post studies, was air dropped into this hot seat. I also Learnt and practiced Elliot wave theory, a comprehensive technical analysis, from my most respected guru, the consultant to the company. Combining technicals with fundamental analysis, I found my career getting richer by the day with learnings on markets. Markets shape you well with instant success and failures.
However, there came a time after 4 years, when it appeared that my learning curve was flattening. That is when I was rightly guided to move to a foreign bank FX desks so that I could advise many clients with diversified risk profile. I was fortunate to get offers from couple and had to choose, rightly, Standard Chartered Bank (SCB).
In 1999, I joined SCB‘s FX sales desk, which advised corporates on markets and managing market risk, which included FX, Interest Rates and briefly, commodities. It proved to be very enriching for a corporate risk manager to switch to the other side of the table and advise clients. Clients appreciated my knowledge on corporate working culture and management expectations, to provide practical advises than my other colleagues in the industry.
SCB was a good learning ground and also provided growth opportunities with movement to different locations, covering different client profiles and management responsibilities for professional growth and learning. With these, 19 years passed and steep learning helped me shape myself both as a financial markets expert, and a human being with leadership skills. Last role held was that of Managing Director & Regional Head, Financial Market Sales, Commercial Banking segment covering South Asia region.
Now, with the intent to build my career 2.0, filled with more satisfying day to day activities, I focus on teaching alongside consulting and mentoring. I take pride in doing this in a unique practical approach including dealing room role plays, cross functional collaborative value creation, combined with strong academic orientation. I am privileged to share my knowledge with large number of budding Bankers, corporate risk managers & bright Students through engagement with training arm of a leading national rating company & reputed B-schools including IIM-Calcutta.
During my corporate career in both the earlier organizations, I had conducted in-numerous voluntary classroom training sessions for both colleagues and clients, which I now extend to wider group passionately.
